Grilling Safety Tips For Warm Weather

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

July is just around the corner and happens to be the peak month for grilling fires, followed by May, June & August.  Three out of five households own a gas grill, which translates to an increased risk of home fires.  Nearly 9,000 home fires are started by grilling accidents each year.

The leading factor (19%) contributing to grill-related accidents is failure to clean the grill.  The second leading factor (17%) is having a flammable item too close to the grill.  So be sure to clean your grill properly before use and make sure that all flammable items are out of the way.

Placement of your grill is important, grills should be placed well away from home/deck railings and out from under eaves and branches.  Also check for leaks or breaks in your gas lines before each use.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers several additional grilling safety tips at http://www.nfpa.org/public-education/by-topic/outdoors-and-seasonal/grilling.

Please take the proper steps to avoid any grilling accidents this summer.

Why Timing is Everything When Your Property is Affected by Water Damage

3/10/2022 (Permalink)

Whether it be flooding, a burst pipe, or a sewer or drain backup, the speed with which water mitigation starts is critical.

Within the first few minutes of a water damage:

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
  • Water is immersed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

Within the first 24 hours:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack.
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
  • A musty odor appears.

Within the first 48 hours to 1 week:

  • Mold and mildew may grow and spread.
  • Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp.
  • Metal begins to rust and corrode.
  • Furniture warps and shows signs of mold.
  • Wood flooring cups and warps.

Greater than 1 week:

  • Restoration time and cost increase significantly therefore, extensive repair & rebuilding may be necessary.
  • Structural safety, mold growth, and biohazard contaminants post serious risks to occupants.

In addition, most insurance policies have provisions that require you to take action to prevent further damage from occurring.

Whether you live in Boyd, Carter, Greenup or Lewis Counties or elsewhere, SERVPRO will respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are faster to any sized disaster.

Water Damage from your Washing Machine

3/10/2022 (Permalink)

Washing machines have been the cause of countless water losses and mold in homes.  SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties respond to dozens of water and mold losses monthly.

A washing machine can leak into the floors and to the room immediately below causing extensive damage to the floors, drywall, and insulation.  As a rule, every home owner should make a regular habit of checking the drain and hoses from their washing machine to ensure they are dry.

Hard water buildup on the hoses and fittings can also lead to water issues as it is a sign there is damage to the hardware.  In addition to the hoses, look for water on the floor surrounding your machine to ensure the machine it’s self is not leaking.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be install in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detectors requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or client to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance.

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using a test button.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps" the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old

Managing Mold

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Molds are found in every environment, and mold spores reproduce rapidly when moisture is present. An institute of Medicine study found excessive dampness indoors encourages the growth of molds and other organisms potentially causing a public health problem. The EPA advised that the potential health concerns from molds are important reason to prevent moisture problems leading to mold growth.

SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis Counties professionals handle water damages every day and know prompt action is required to prevent mold growth, if there is an ongoing moisture problem in the building, be alert for:

  • The presence of visible mold
  • Strong, musty odors, which may indicate mold is present
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth
  • Excessive humidity.

These conditions may require the expertise of a qualified Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional to inspect the building for mold growth and water damage problems.

SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis Counties cares about proper restoration of your structure and, in most water damage situations, can safely restore your building to preloss condition.

Take a look at your trees!

Conduct a pre-storm assessment. Identify trouble spots before a storm hits.

Some potential hazards to look for on your property:

  • Cracks in tree trunks or major limbs
  • Hollow, aged and decayed trees
  • One-sided or significantly leaning trees
  • Branches leaning more than 45 degrees over the roof
  • Anything in close proximity to utility lines
  • Shelf-like fungus or mushrooms
  • Trees with dangerous leans

Take measures to prevent damage.
After assessing possible hazards to your property, you may need to take any number of measures to limit potential damage.

  • Remove dead, diseased or damaged limbs
  • Have leaning trees inspected and consider removing those with large cavities
  • Prune branches too close to your house and over the street
  • Check your gutters, and remove debris to prevent water damage.

Sump Pump ready for anything.

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Tips to Avoid Water Damage

No power: If the power goes out during a storm, your sump pump won’t be able to drain the water

Wrong size: If your sump pump is too small a sump pump for your home’s size can mean too big a job for it to handle. On the flip side, running too large a sump pump can shorten its lifespan.

Old age: Just like any appliance, the years can reduce the efficiency and working order of your sump pump. The average lifespan of a sump pump is roughly 10 years. If yours is creeping up in age, consider replacing it with a more current model.

Clogged pipe: Debris can enter your discharge pipe and create a backup. With nowhere for water to flow, your sump pump will come to a stop.

Lack of maintenance: Your home and the appliances that make it run require regular maintenance. Clean your sump pump three to four times a year to avoid blockages in your discharge line, vents, and floats.

Switch issues: When the sump pump shifts in the basin, the float that administers the switch can cause it to become jammed.

Product or installation problem: In addition to product defects, which are out of your control, improper installation can also cause sump pump failure.

Sump pump fails and causes water damage while you are out of town.

Flood Facts

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. FEMA reports, in the last 8 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. As most of us have recently experienced, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas.

Here are a few Flood Facts provided by FEMA:

  • Flash floods can bring walls of water from 10 to 20 feet high.
  • Flooding can be caused by spring thawing (snow and frozen grounds melting in the spring), heavy rains, snow melt runoffs, flash floods, and mudflows.
  • Floods are the most widespread natural disaster aside from wildfires.
  • A 2,000 square foot home undergoing 12 feet of water damage could cost more than $50,000 to repair.

Here are a few supplies you need to prepare for a flood:

  • Stock up on First Aid items
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Three gallons of water per person for 3 days
  • Battery operated radio for weather reports
  • Extra batteries
  • Personal hygiene necessities

Keep Fall Fire-Free

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

The fall season brings cooler temperatures, beautiful colors, and an abundance of outdoor activities.  Plan ahead this season to help ensure it is safe and fire-free.

  • Fall decoration, like dried flowers and cornstalks, are highly flammable.  Keep these and other decorations away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters.
  • Keep emergency exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames.  Be sure they know how to stop, drop, and roll if their clothing catches fire.
  • Remember safety first when choosing a Halloween costume.  Consider avoiding billowing fabric.  If you are making your costume, choose material that won't easily ignite if it comes into contact with heat or a flame.
  • It is safest to use a flashlight or battery-operated candle in a jack-o-lantern.  Use extreme caution if using a real candle.  Place lit pumpkins away from anything that can burn, and out of the way of doorsteps, walkways, and yards.

First Aid Tips:

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

With Summer here, accidents tend to come more frequently. It's always a good thing to know about basic first aid and what to do if there is an accident.

Workplace First Aid Basics Everyone Should Know

Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds are very common in both children and adults and can be caused by trauma to the nose or simple irritation of the mucus membranes. Do not make a nosebleed victim raise their head or lie down, as this can actually make the bleeding worse. Instead, pinch the nostrils closed for as many as ten minutes, allowing the broken vein in the nose to close.

Cardiac Compressions

Nowadays, the American Heart Association doesn’t mandate that everyone learn rescue breathing—all you have to do is put your hands over the victim’s heart and push, to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. It’s a simple technique that could mean the difference between life and death, and the American Heart Association’s statistics demonstrate this in stark terms. Consider these fact

  • Approximately 88% of all cardiac arrests do not happen in a hospital or healthcare facility, and nowhere near a healthcare professional.
  • A large percentage of cardiac arrest victims appear perfectly healthy just before their attack.
  • It takes approximately 8-12 minutes on average for an ambulance to arrive on the scene of an emergency.
  • Bystander CPR could increase the victim’s chance of survival by as much as 300.

The Heimlich Maneuver

Not to be confused with CPR, the Heimlich maneuver is supposed to help someone who is choking on a foreign object. First, ask the victim if they are choking; in an emergency situation, the person will usually not be able to talk.

How to Treat Shock

Shock occurs when too little blood circulates to the brain. This means that the brain is not receiving enough oxygen, which leads to a feeling of faintness, disorientation and dizziness. Shock may occur:

  • after an accident involving loss of blood
  • after a serious infection, with loss of fluids
  • after a serious burn
  • after other accidents that cause loss of fluids or blood
  • as part of an allergic reaction

Stop Heavy Bleeding

If someone is bleeding heavily, they will not be able to form a clot—and they could bleed out. You can stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the wound—ideally with a sterile cloth, although you can also use ripped pieces of T-shirt or anything else you have on hand. Raising the wounded limb over the heart will also help to slow down heavy bleeding.

Everything You Need to Know for Power Outages

7/15/2021 (Permalink)

As summer continues and fall approaches, we may see some major power outages across the nation. Power outages can not only be dangerous to you and your family; but they can also cause immense stress if you are not properly prepared.

According to ready.gov:

Before a Power Outage:

  • Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit, including a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.
  • Make sure you have alternative charging methods for your phone or any device that requires power.
  • Charge cell phones and any battery powered devices.
  • Know where the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener is located and how to operate it.
  • Purchase ice or freeze water-filled plastic containers to help keep food cold during a temporary power outage.
  • Keep your car’s gas tank full; gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps. If you use your car to re-charge devices, do NOT keep the car running in a garage, partially enclosed space, or close to a home, this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by visiting your state’s or local website so you can locate the closest cooling and warming shelters.
  • If you rely on anything that is battery-operated or power dependent like a medical device determine a back-up plan.

During a Power Outage

  • Only use flashlights for emergency lighting, candles can cause fires.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. Most food requiring refrigeration can be kept safely in a closed refrigerator for several hours. An unopened refrigerator will keep food cold for about four (4) hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours.
  • Take steps to remain cool if it is hot outside. In intense heat when the power may be off for a long time, consider going to a movie theater, shopping mall or “cooling shelter” that may be open in your community. If you remain at home, move to the lowest level of your home, since cool air falls. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Put on layers of warm clothing if it is cold outside. Never burn charcoal for heating or cooking indoors. Never use your oven as a source of heat. If the power may be out for a prolonged period, plan to go to another location (the home of a relative or friend, or a public facility) that has heat to keep warm.
  • Turn off or disconnect appliances and other equipment in case of a momentary power “surge” that can damage computers and other devices. Consider adding surge protectors.
  • If you are considering purchasing a generator for your home, consult an electrician or engineer before purchasing and installing.
  • Only use generators away from your home and NEVER run a generator inside a home or garage, or connect it to your home's electrical system.

Mitigation of Water Damage

7/8/2021 (Permalink)

Mitigation Of Water Damage

Large spills and water line breaks can severely affect your Dover property. Smaller intrusions might not gain your attention during their first occurrence. Some smaller leaks grow in size rapidly while others never become larger.

You could also find their homes affected by water damage when gutters malfunction and manage rainwater inefficiently. SERVPRO technicians can help resolve most of these issues, while we rely on trusted partners to assist with more extensive repairs. Regardless of where the water comes in, stopping its flow remains a crucial aspect of successful water damage mitigation.

The ability to stop the water from returning is essential to successful mitigation. We use highly sensitive instruments to help us determine the source of the water affecting and damaging your house. Zooming in on the entry point can also reveal other areas with water damage. We mitigate these also, removing damaged materials and cleaning up the grime that often develops in areas affected in this manner.

Small leaks in water lines can cause a small increase in your water bill every month, but the real cost involves the damage affecting your home. When materials crumble and fall apart, they can also create debris that clogs vacuum cleaners and pose a choking hazard to young toddlers. Vermin can also use openings in your home's exterior to make their nests and become a severe nuisance. Closing up these holes also prevents such infestations from continuing.

After we mitigate water damage and restore your home, we encourage our customers to contact us again in the event any signs of water damage reappear. While this remains unlikely in the physical sense, odors can develop in homes that have sustained water damage. Our Odor Control Technician (OCT) can help resolve this problem quickly and make your home smell “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage Can Cause Problems!

7/1/2021 (Permalink)

When you have unwanted water from a flood or a pipe burst, a quick response is key! If water is not extracted and is not dried out in a timely manner, the water damage can cause mold. In order to limit the growth of mold in your home, you must control how much moisture is in your home. Within 24 to 48 hours a thorough clean-up and drying, and possible removals of water-damaged materials, such as drywall, carpeting, and padding, can prevent or limit mold growth. SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties Professionals are highly trained to dry down an affected area and to safely and effectively to control and remove and mold contaminants while protecting the health and safety of any occupants that are in the building.

Can You Dry Hardwood Floors After A Water Damage?

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

With summer approaching, this means that we will begin to see a rise in storms. If your home or office floods due to heavy rainfall, immediately there are thoughts of ruined floors. A common question that is asked is:

“Can I dry hardwood floor after water damage?” The amount of homes with hardwood floors is steadily increasing for many reasons, the most prominent being that hardwood floors not only tend to sell homes faster, but they also increase the price. The only downfall is that in the event of a flood or water overflow, hardwood floors cannot be easily taken out and dried like carpet can.

Water damage can increase drastically if not taken care of properly, professionally, and in a timely manner. Here are some of the main considerations:

Response Time - Water damage can be greatly decreased depending on the response time to the problem. Time is of the essence when it comes to hardwood floor water damage – the moisture, temperature, and dust layer beneath a wet wood floor can provide an ideal environment for mold and many other problems.

Type of Wood Flooring - Before you can determine how to properly dry hardwood floor, you need to determine what type of wood flooring you have.

Amount Of Moisture - A flooded hardwood floor can have up to 40% moisture content and can retain well above the normal amount of moisture for weeks if left to dry on their own. Nails may begin to lift, glue may release causing separation between floor pieces, and tongue and groove floors often cup or buckle when moisture has been absorbed.

If you decide to attempt to dry and save hardwood floors in place SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties has specialized drying equipment that forces airflow beneath the surface of the floor, allowing moisture to be released.

A Contingency Plan For Your Business

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

It is never not a great time to be prepared for the unexpected.

An emergency escape plan is not required for all businesses; however, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends building an emergency action plan to protect yourself, your employees and your business during an emergency. OSHA suggests the following steps when developing such a plan.

  • Organize an Emergency Preparedness Procedures review with employees to review your company’s emergency plans. You may wish to select an individual or team of individuals to lead and coordinate your emergency plan.
  • Once a plan is developed, post evacuation procedures, including routes and exits, where they are easily accessible to all employees. Ensure all routes and exits are clearly marked and well lit, wide enough to accommodate the number of evacuating personnel and that the path is unobstructed and clear of debris at all times.
  • Conduct office evacuation exercises and drills. Designate a safe spot outside of the facility where employees can regroup, recover and conduct a head count. Once completed, evaluate how well the plan worked and if additional training or exercises are needed.

Quick Response Is Crucial.

Does Your House Need a Breather?

5/19/2021 (Permalink)

Owning a home is a wonderful experience that comes with huge responsibilities. The list of what needs to be checked is a lengthy one that can honestly seem overwhelming at times – so let us handle a few of them for you!

One area that many homeowners neglect is properly maintaining the air ducts. If you think about what the air ducts do for your home, it is very similar to what lungs do for your body. With that in mind, the industry standard for residential properties is to have the air ducts cleaned every two-five years. This process improves indoor air quality by moving debris within the ductwork. It will increase the lifespan of your AC system and make it more efficient.

You may be thinking, “What could they possibly find in these units?” Well, I am glad you asked!

We have removed things as crazy as a toy car, to the more serious discoveries of mold that people never knew existed. Fortunately, not only do we remove debris, but we also treat it with an antimicrobial agent to eliminate mold and bacteria. This is a preventive measure that absolutely helps keep your system free of nasty airborne agents.

Do the smart thing and let us keep your house lungs clean. We will ensure your ductwork, air handler, and system are free of old toy cars and mold. We are equipped to handle any size unit whether you have a residential home that needs care or a building as large as a hospital. If we do find damaged duct-work or maybe the air duct was never connected, we can complete minor repairs such as reattaching them to the vent.

World Water Day 2021

3/1/2021 (Permalink)

World Water Day is an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues, be inspired to tell others and take action to make a difference. World Water Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development where an international observance for water was recommended. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day. It has been held annually since then.

The theme in 2021 is Valuing Water.  Water means different things to different people.  This conversation is about what water means to you.  How is water important to your home and family life, your livelihood, your cultural practices, your wellbeing, your local environment?  By recording - and celebrating - all the different ways water benefits our lives, we can value water properly and safeguard it effectively for everyone.

World Water Day is an opportunity to learn more and be inspired to tell others. Read reports, watch videos and download teaching material from the international water community.

February is National Canned Food Month

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

February is National Canned Food Month. Canned food is a great way to prepare for a natural disaster, as it has a long shelf life when stored at the correct temperature. It's also an easy way to make cooking a lot faster with products like crushed tomatoes and diced chicken. Plus, it's an inexpensive way to get out-of-season produce.

While homes can certainly use canned goods, another place that needs them is your local food pantry. Food pantries can help low income families make it to their next paycheck without missing meals. Some foods come ready to eat, which is helpful for folks who don't have access to a stove or kitchen. Consider donating your time, efforts, or money to a local food charity.  Money is often better for food charities because they can buy things at a wholesale rate, which means they get more for the money than you would in a grocery store.

If you'd prefer to donate goods, here are some common things that food banks need:

  • peanut butter
  • canned tuna and chicken
  • shelf-stable milk and substitutes
  • 100% juice
  • oatmeal
  • rice
  • low sodium soups
  • beans
  • pasta

Stay Aware of the Weather to Help Avoid Water Damage to Your Business or Home

1/16/2021 (Permalink)

When a winter storm or unusually cold temperatures strikes your home or business, widespread damage can be expected. Among the worst type of damage is water damage, which can take a few forms, including:

  • Water and ice damage from clogged gutters
  • Frozen outdoor hoses causing burst valves
  • A pipe break in exposed plumbing

Businesses Should Clean the Gutters Just Like a Homeowner

Even if you rent the building you occupy, the gutters need to be regularly cleaned. Leaves and debris can cause ice dams during a winter storm, leading to serious water damage. It can force water under eaves and destroy a roof.

Once water gets into unprotected areas, it can cause tons of havoc inside. Plus, mold can grow from wet building materials, and if it gets bad enough, your operations might be shut down while it’s cleaned up. Gutter guards can also help prevent ice dams.

Rubber Hoses Can Cause a Plumbing Disaster
If your business uses hoses outside for cleanup or landscaping maintenance, make sure they are taken in if the weather is supposed to drop below 30 degrees. The water valve can take short excursions below freezing, but not long ones. If you expect a deep freeze, protect the valve with an outdoor foam faucet cover.

Exposed Plumbing Suffers During Unusual Cold
Virtually every winter in Ohio comes with a prolonged cold wave that will cause burst pipes for many businesses.  If a winter storm happens late at night, it might not be caught for hours, causing massive destruction.

Once it gets this serious, you’ll need an experienced local storm damage cleanup company to evaluate your immediate needs and stop further damage.

Common Causes of Household Fires

1/16/2021 (Permalink)

Here are top 5 most common causes of house fires as identified by the National Fire Protection Association.

Candles

From 2007-2011, the NFPA says there were an average of 10,630 fires in the U.S. that were started by candles, causing 115 deaths, 903 injuries and approximately $418 million in property damage. That is an average of 29 candle fires per day.

Safety tips:

  • Never leave a candle burning near flammable items.
  • Never leave a candle burning in a child’s room or an unoccupied room.
  • Make sure candles fit securing into candle holders so they won’t tip over.
  • Blow out any candles before leaving a room or going to sleep

Smoking

While the number of fires caused by smoking is trending downward, the NFPA found that there was still an average of 17,600 related fires per year resulting in 490 deaths and more than $516 million in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • If you smoke, consider smoking outside.
  • Use wide, sturdy ashtrays to catch butts and ashes.
  • Look for cigarette butts under furniture and between seat cushions to make sure no lit butts have fallen someplace where they can’t be seen.
  • Don’t smoke in bed, when you’re tired or around medical oxygen.

Electrical & Lighting

According to the NFPA, in 2011 approximately 47,700 home structure fires were caused by some sort of electrical failure or malfunction. These resulted in 418 deaths, 1,570 injuries and $1.4 billion in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • Don’t overload outlets or electrical cords.
  • Make sure you have the right cord for the job – inside cords for inside, heavy duty/outside cords for outdoor use.
  • Don’t leave Christmas lights, Christmas trees, or halogen lights on overnight or when not at home.
  • Consider having an electrician perform an annual checkup of your home’s wiring.

Dryers & Washing Machines

Clothes dryer fires happen more often than one might think, accounting for 16,800 home structure fires in 2010 and doing more than $236 million in property damage.

Safety tips:

  • Clean the lint screen frequently and don’t run the dryer without it.
  • For gas and propane dryers, make sure there aren’t any leaks in the lines.
  • Vent the dryer to the outside of the house and ensure nothing blocks the vent pipe.

  • Keep the area around the dryer free of combustible materials.

Lightning

Safety tips:

  • Stay away from doors and windows during an electrical storm.
  • Do not use corded phones, computers, TVs or other electrical equipment during storms.
  • Unplug major electronics – TVs, stereo equipment, computers and microwaves to minimize damage if there is a lightning strike close by.

Extinguish Odors With Deodorization

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems. As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

With technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration (IIRC), SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties provides specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. We do not cover up lingering odors with a fragrance; we seek out and remove the sources of the odor. If you or a customer suffer fire damage or some other accident and require deodorization services, contact SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties at (606) 836-8000. Whether its fire, water, or mold damage, or just a stubborn odor that refuses to go away, we'll help make it "Like it never even happened."

Other Odors that may require DEODORIZATION:

  • Cigarette Smoke
  • Pet Odors
  • Decomposition
  • Mold

Space Heaters Need Their Space

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties reminds you that half of all home heating fires happen during the months of December, January, and February. The National Fire Protection Association Agency offer the following safety tips:

  • Place the heater on a hard, level, and nonflammable surface. They are intended to sit on the floor and not a table.
  • Establish a 3-foot kid and pet-free zone around the heater, and never put a space heater in a child's room.
  • Keep the space heater at least 3 feet away from such combustible materials as furniture, bedding, and curtains.
  • Do not use a heater in a workshop or garage near paint, gas cans, or matches.
  • Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Unplug the heater when not in use by pulling the plug straight from the outlet. Check the cord for damage periodically, and do not use it if it’s frayed or worn.
  • Do not plug another electrical device or an extension cord into the same outlet as a heater, which can cause overheating.
  • Install working smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly.

SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup and Lewis Counties is always available 24/7/365 to service your needs!

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry.  As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.  Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.  The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.  Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Tips For Preventing Fires

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

As the temperature starts to drop we begin see an increase in fire damage. This blog will focus on ways to help prevent fires at your home or business. According to a 2018 study there were over 1.3 million properties that suffered a fire damage. This resulted in over 15,000 injuries and over 25 million dollars in repairs. By practicing these tips you can help prevent having a fire at your house.

-Check Smoke Detectors Regularly

When a fire initially starts a properly working smoke detector can not only save you money, but it could also save your life. It is recommended to test them monthly and frequently exchange the batteries. It only takes a few minutes to test them and its recommended to completely replace the detectors once every ten years. If your house has more then one floor its best to have detectors on each level and especially one close to each sleeping area.

-Watch Your Appliances

Stoves, washing machines, and microwaves all make our lives easier. However, when not used properly they can easily start a fire. Its recommended to clean these appliances regularly and not to use them when nobody is present.

-Be Extra Safe in The Kitchen

Recent studies have show that over half of house fires start in the kitchen. It’s important make sure you keep a fire extinguisher in close reach of the kitchen. Grease fires are most common in this area. It’s important to know that you must treat a grease fire differently than a regular fire. Never use water to put out a grease fire. Instead try to cover the fire with a heavy metal lid or dump baking soda directly on it.

-Don’t Smoke Inside

We don’t recommend smoking period. However, if you do please step outside and dispose your cigarette butts in a safe place.

-Have A Plan

Even if you follow all these tips there is still a chance your home could experience a fire. It’s smart to have an emergency plan in place. If you don’t already one the best time to make one is now. Choose a safe meeting place outside your house. Establish escape routes from every room of your house. Finally make sure everyone in your home knows where the fire extinguishers are and how to use them properly.

Commercial Cleaning Services

11/3/2020 (Permalink)

When commercial building owners think of SERVPRO fire, water, and mold are the first things to come to mind. While these things are our specialty, there is also a long list of other services we provide to our commercial clients. This blog will provide a spotlight on some of the lesser known services that we perform on commercial buildings.

-Carpet Cleanings

It’s important for commercial facilities to have a professional appearance inside and out. One effective way to keep the inside looking and smelling nice is to have the carpets cleaned regularly. One main benefit from this service is that it extends the life of the carpet.

-Air Duct Cleaning

Keeping the air ducts clean is important for many reasons. The most important one is that it will save you money in the long run. If your ducts are dirty and congested it makes the unit work harder and uses more energy. This will cause your HVAC unit lifespan to decrease dramatically. Clean air ducts not only keep the facility smelling better, but it also increases the life of your unit.

-Bio Hazard Cleanup

Although this doesn’t happen everyday its good to know a company that can help you with this type of cleanup. If an employee cuts his hand on a machine, we can clean up the mess that is left behind. This type of cleaning isn’t done by regular janitorial companies. There are extra safety measures that must be in place to clean up biohazard.

-Corona Virus Cleanings

We offer two different types of corona cleanup. Preventative cleanings as well as confirmed cases. We can sanitize and disinfect large commercial facilities. By doing so your company can safely return to work if an employee tests positive.

These are just a few of our lesser known services. If anything ever goes wrong at your commercial facility please reach out and we will be happy to assist your needs! Call SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties at (606)-836-8000.

Fire Damage- The Breakdown of Damage

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage-The Breakdown Of Damage

There are roughly 300,000 to 400,000 residential home fires per year in the United States. These fires range from small to large and originate inside of the home. Fires are a devastating occurrence for homeowners and are extremely hard to overcome, as they take months to clean and repair. SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis County specializes in fire damage restoration and is here to help if you find yourself in need.

Damage to your structure and contents happen rapidly after the fire occurs. Every second counts after the fire is extinguished and our professionals know that damages increase and cost escalates the longer neutralization, corrosion control and cleaning is delayed. When restoration is prolonged, effects brought on by smoke exposure are extended. Below is a breakdown of the damage and effects from fire and smoke on a home.

Within Minutes:

Acid soot residues cause plastics to yellow; small appliances located close to the source of combustion discolor; highly porous materials (marble, alabaster) discolor permanently.

Within Hours:

Acid residues stain grout in bathrooms; fiberglass bath fixtures may yellow; uncoated metals tarnish, countertops may yellow; finishes on appliances, particularly refrigerators, may yellow; furniture finishes may discolor.

Within Days:

In time, acid residues cause painted walls to yellow permanently; metal corrodes, pits and rusts; wood furniture requires refinishing; vinyl flooring requires refinishing or replacement; clothing becomes soot stained; upholstery stains permanently.

Within Weeks:

Restoration costs escalate tremendously. Synthetic carpet fibers may yellow or discolor permanently; silver plate is corroded permanently; glass, crystal, china may require replacement due to severe etching and pitting caused by prolonged exposure to acid soot residues.

A Contingency Plan For Your Business

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

You Weathered the Storm. Now It's Time to Weather The Insurance.

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

It’s not often that you file a homeowners insurance claim, but when and if that time comes there are many aspects to keep in mind during the process.

If you have endured storm damage in your home it is important that you assess your property, but only after it is safe to do so. Ensure that there are no downed power lines or other dangerous conditions before investigating the damage. Once you have investigated your property for damage it is time to report the damage to your Insurance Company. Knowing what to look for and what to expect with the claims process can relieve some of the stress in the situation.

How Do You Evaluate Your Property for Damage?

It is important that you complete a visual inspection of the exterior of your home, paying special attention to your roof, windows, gutters, facia and siding. If you have a chimney you will want to inspect it as well. Notate any missing shingles, cracks in the siding or brick, fallen gutters and window damage. Also, inspect your HVAC unit for any noticeable damage. Be sure to discuss all of the items and areas notated with your insurance adjuster.

Adjuster Insurance Inspection

Once you have contacted your Insurance Company and filed a claim they will assign an adjuster. The adjuster assigned to your claim will schedule a time to come and assess the damage of your property. Adjusters are trained to look at certain areas of the home that are prone to damage, but be sure to share the items that you notated on your initial inspection as well. Once their inspection is completed they will begin the process for your claim.

Once you have everything in order you can begin the process of repairs to your home. SERVPRO® of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties is here to help. We are experienced and skilled in Water & Fire Damage. Call our office today at (606)-836-8000 if you would like to schedule an appointment for a free estimate.

How Efficient is SERVPRO’s Moisture Extraction Process?

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO technicians are thoroughly trained in water extraction with tools like truck-mounted extraction units, wands, pumps, rover vacuums, and mops. Moisture extraction accelerates the structural drying process by as much as 1,222%, which is crucial in sudden, high-volume water damage situations like a dishwasher overflow.

Wand extractors are the tool of choice for preventing moisture migration before moving on to other devices.

The extraction process may require multiple passes to prepare a space for structural drying.

Most extraction units feature heater, pump, and vacuum systems to address water-damaged upholstery and carpeting. However, for most water damage mitigation purposes, only the vacuum portion is used.

SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter Greenup & Lewis Counties can keep your property looking, "Like it never even happened." Contact your local disaster cleanup team at (606)-836-8000 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Can Water Damage Repair Professionals Restore My Home's Hardwood Floors?

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

No Homeowner Wants to Lose Beautiful Hardwood Floors to Water Damage -- Repair Strategies Are Successful When SERVPRO Is on the Job.

A water incursion can happen for a vast number of reasons: overflowing sinks, broken plumbing, clogged condensation drains in AC units, the rain blowing through open doors or windows, malfunctioning appliances, and more. You hope all that is needed in your home is a mop-up and maybe a visit from the plumber, and all will be good again. Why do you believe you dodged a more significant disaster? The water covering your floor seems to be gone, so you were the lucky one, right?

Where Does the Water Go After Flowing Across My Hardwood Floors?

You are not alone in your hope that water damage repair to your home is unnecessary. One of the most insidious and unexpected characteristics of water damage is its ability to hide from visual inspections, even by experts. A frequent place where water uses its disappearing ability is on -- and in -- hardwood floors.

Why Are Hardwood Floors Susceptible to Significant Water Damage?

The basic construction of a hardwood floor, seen in a cross-section, illuminates the pathways of water migration well. Several layers make up the floor, and the water has little trouble percolating down through them. Older floors, treasured for their burnished patina, were usually constructed quite simply:

Floor joists supporting the upper building materials

Subfloor, usually made of a plywood-type material, and unfinished, one layer up from the joists

Strips and planks of hardwood installed top-side often finished with stains and sealants on the visible side, but unfinished on the edges and bottom

Newer hardwood floors might have additional layers added for resilience, creating a softer feel when walking. The water is still able to seep down between the edges and the joints between sections to reach porous materials below.

Does the Water Dry Out in the Under Layers?

SERVPRO crews often find homeowners mystified as to the reasons for their hardwood floors damage. After a spill or flooding, you cannot assume that water simply drains away or dries out quickly wherever it lands.

Where Does Water Hide and How Does the Hidden Water Hurt Your Hardwood Floor?

Do not be caught in this situation, as your seemingly dry floor will begin to show “signature” hardwood damage patterns. The unfinished wood products under the hardwood layer absorb the water readily and need some professional assistance in facilitating evaporation. As they absorb the water, they swell, putting pressure on the upper hardwood flooring. Even more importantly, they provide a ready source of moisture that the unfinished bottoms and edges of the strips and planks wick up. This moisture causes the hardwood to distort or warp as well, creating the following commonly seen damage:

Cupping -- the edges of each piece of hardwood push up, resulting in the center of each plank or strip looking as though it is the bottom of a “cup” in cross-section

Crowning -- the center of each plank or strip swells, (sometimes later because of over-drying)

Buckling -- the damage is severe enough to force the hardwood to disengage from the subfloor and to curve away at joints

What Can Be Done to Save Hardwood Floors When the Underlying Layers Are Wet?

One crucial point is to call on professionals immediately, even if you cannot see the damage. Our technicians use various moisture detection and metering devices to locate and evaluate the severity of water absorption in the substrate of your floor. Then we act quickly to dry all layers to average moisture levels for your region and in unaffected areas of your home. When we determine where the moisture is trapped, we consider from among the following interventions:

Reducing the relative humidity to 30% to 45%

Positioning air movers to direct air floor both under and over the hardwood

Use floor mats (flat plastic that seals to the floor and attaches to hoses connected to extractors) to pull moisture through several layers

Adjust room temperature to increase evaporation

Floor finishes acting as vapor barrier might be removed or perforated with a pin roller

If accessible, dry the floor from the story beneath -- remove ceiling tiles for better flow

When water damage threatens to ruin your home’s floors, SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties is there for you with research-based solutions. Reduce the stress and worry of water loss with a call to (606) 836-8000 -- We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Commercial Water Damage Restoration In Your Business

Discovering Lead during Commercial Water Damage Restoration of your Business

Older, pre-1970, buildings commonly found in the banking sector can feature dangerous construction materials. Asbestos and lead-based paints are among the chief culprits who, if disturbed, need to be dealt with professionally and responsibly. A natural disaster such as water incidents can bring these materials into sharp focus, requiring specialist training and equipment to remove or restore. As the property manager of the bank, your janitorial team lacks the expertise and equipment to restore the property safely.

In situations where sensitive materials play a role, you must consider professional commercial flood damage restoration services in Brandon.  Here at SERVPRO, our roster includes technicians with Lead-Based Paint and Renovations (RRRP) qualifications. Operators need to be careful about disturbing potentially harmful substances like lead or asbestos during the renovation of your property. Our contacts in the industry mean we can arrange for an asbestos abatement specialist to work with us on-site, meaning you only have to deal with one company throughout service.

There are many specific tools required to remove lead-based paint from a commercial location. All active members of the restoration team, or those entering the site, need to have personal protective equipment (PPE.) Chief among this equipment is respirators. Lead particles can be hazardous with ingestion. Since removing lead requires agitative scrapping or sanding, there is a high risk of lead particles becoming air-borne, creating an unsafe indoor air concern.

Once the removal of lead is complete, SERVPRO technicians can dispose of it at a particular waste management facility. By bagging the materials up in thick, double-sealed bags, we reduce the risk of material cross-contamination. SERVPRO RRRP technicians then use high-particulate air (HEPA) fitted vacuums and air-scrubbers to filter any harmful contaminants from indoor air. Placing box fans in the affected area once complete can help to circulate out any unpleasant odors from water damages.

Practicing legal safety standards for your staff and customers in an emergency is essential. For lead-based paint renovation, contact SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties at (606) 836-8000.

Slow the Flow of Storm Water with Smart Landscaping

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Have you ever seen a school science demonstration of water being poured into two equal containers of soil, but one has plants growing and one does not? In the box void of vegetation, the water runs out the bottom nearly as quickly as it flowed in. In the box containing rooted plants, only a minimal amount of water trickles out. This experiment shows the importance of proper water management around your property. Learn how you can become one with the flow, using easy landscaping projects to prevent storm run-off from causing outside flooding around your home in Boyd, Carter, Greenup, or Lewis County home.

Slow the flow. Apply a deep layer of heavy mulch to slow rain drainage, giving it time to filter through the soil instead of pooling or running off to problem areas.

Cultivate plants. Installing plants and shrubs at the base of your home can help slow the flow of water and prevent outside flooding. If you have a particular area where water tends to pool during storms, consider making a rain garden. This shallow basin is not a bog or a pond, but it uses plants to filter the rainwater and facilitate its travels to the water table.

Be a water mover. During the next rainstorm, check the flow of water from your roof. Look for areas that need to be rerouted and consider adding rain chains, moving gutters, or adding flexible extensions to downspouts to direct water away from your foundation.

Keep water captive. Add a rain barrel to the end of a downspout and feel good about your impact on the environment when using that recovered water to help take care of your plants.

Outside flooding can cause damage to structures on your property.

When water damage happens, it can quickly lead to mold trouble since mold spores are abundant in the environment and reproduce quickly. Professional water mitigation specialists can help clean up floodwater and ensure materials are dried thoroughly to prevent your minor problem from becoming a major one.

Does Your Commercial Building Have Mold?

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

Have you found some type of mold in your commercial building? We understand that you may be concerned about the health of yourself and your employees. Rest assured that we receive many calls concerning mold in commercial buildings, and we don't want you to panic.

We can address these concerns, by finding out:

  • Where is the source of moisture?
  • What needs to be fixed to stop the moisture from entering the workplace?
  • Are any employees experiencing any health effects from this?

If the answer is “Yes” to the Health Issues question, we immediately refer the called to a company that specializes in Indoor Air Quality and Mold testing. We have a few companies that we work closely with if you would like recommendations.

We want to make something very clear as there tends to be confusion around this topic: SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties is able to remediate the mold, but we cannot test the mold. An Indoor Air Quality Specialist is able to give the business owner more information through 1.) a full site visual inspection, 2.) collection and testing cultured air and surface samples, and 3.) measuring the moisture levels in the building. Their findings and recommendations are included in a report, or protocol, which is given to the customer.

  • The next step is for the commercial customer to send us the protocol.
  • We can then do an assessment at the business site.
  • Only then, can we give a price range, and scope of work, keeping in mind that there may be unknowns.

HVAC Maintenance

5/1/2020 (Permalink)

The main function of the HVAC system, whether in a commercial building or residential home, is to exchange the air and regulate comfort. Putting off routine maintenance of the HVAC system impacts not only building operations but occupant safety as well. If the filters are not regularly changed, they become dirty and clogged- thus restricting airflow and static pressure. When this occurs, it is harder to regulate the temperature and humidity in the building.

Additionally, HVAC units that are under constant stress are more likely to fail due to wear and tear of belts, bearings, and bushings. Clogged drain pans may overflow and cause water damage- something we’ve seen often in our industry. Wiring may overheat or short circuit, which could result in fires. These are only a few of the risks associated with deferred maintenance of the HVAC system in your commercial building. So, how do you avoid these issues? Keep an inventory list of the HVAC equipment in your building. A good inventory list provides insight into the specifications, age, and history of the equipment. This is helpful for routine maintenance and planning for a replacement.

HVAC systems are key to maintaining optimized building health. It is highly recommended to contact a professional when dealing with duct cleaning and air handling units because of the risk of cross-contamination. The certified professional will know how to clean every component associated with the duct system, including reheat coils and VAV terminals. SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties specializes in duct cleaning for both residential and commercial buildings. Make sure you are checking your HVAC system regularly and hiring a professional to perform routine maintenance.

Flood Damage Cleanup

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding can happen when runoff from the mountains causes the water levels of small creeks to rise to unsafe levels. The waters move fast and can reach heights of ten to twenty feet easily. When floodwaters end up in homes, they can cause severe damage to the structures and contents.

If your home floods, you should turn off the utilities until emergency officials say that is it safe to turn them on. Also avoid weakened walls, floors, and roofs. Floodwater may contain chemical toxins, bacteria, mud, and sewage. Therefore, wear rubber boots, masks, and gloves before you begin cleaning up your home. If the floodwater has soaked items like upholstered furniture, carpet and pad, and mattresses, it is advisable to discard them because it is difficult to clean them adequately. You should also discard all the food that came into contact with the floodwater. If you have canned foods, wash the cans thoroughly before opening.

Calling SERVPRO franchise professionals to assist you with the cleanup efforts is also vital. We have competent technicians who can help you get back to your home within a short time. We're available around the clock for emergency call-outs. Whether working with your insurance company or directly with you, our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRTs) can assess the destruction to your property, offer an estimate, and handle the restoration process. We can provide your insurance company with images, videos, measurements, and other pertinent information using insurance-industry approved and preferred methods for resolving claims seamlessly.

We use advanced equipment to extract water from floors, basements, and crawl spaces quickly to expedite drying. We can remove water from many types of flooring using wet vacuuming. Our crew then dries the affected areas using air movers and dehumidifiers. Our professionals also use air scrubbers to filter the air. Using air scrubbers helps control the spread of air-borne mold spores and other harmful microorganisms.

We also use germicides and disinfectants to destroy microorganisms. They destroy up to 99 percent of the organisms they contact on the surfaces where we apply them. These products may or may not affect fungal or bacterial spores, which are typically dormant, reproductive bodies. The common disinfects we use include phenols, quaternary, chlorines, and alcohol.

Flooding may also leave unpleasant scents in your home. Our SERVPRO crew can apply deodorizers to eliminate bad odors. We can also use deodorizers that remove wet material odors that you may misinterpret as mold. Our team can use an electric sprayer, pump sprayer, or mister to apply the deodorizers directly to the affected materials.

After a flooding incident, contact SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Countiesfor help. We have the expertise to perform proper cleanup of your home to make the water intrusion seem “Like it never even happened.” Call us any time at(606) 836-8000.

Choosing The Right Company Matters

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

When the aftermath of a storm, fire or any other type of disaster strikes your life, it can be extremely devastating. It’s hard to know what to do and where to begin when trying to pick up the pieces. If there is significant damage to your home, the thought of the cleanup process can be overwhelming. You may find yourself frequently asking if you should do the cleanup yourself to save the cost of hiring a professional. How hard could it be? The cleanup and restoration process after a disaster is a huge job and defiantly not as simple as a DIY job. Many factors need to be considered and many hidden dangers that can get worse if not handled properly. Here are the reasons why it’s best to hire a professional restoration company after a disaster has struck your home.

Smoke and Fire Damage

On the surface, smoke damage doesn’t seem that bad. You may assume that you could probably use a household cleaner to get rid of any marks or stains. However, the danger of smoke damage isn’t necessarily about what you can see, but what you can’t see. Smoke particles are very fine and have a knack for settling into the small crack and crevices of your home. If not removed, the burnt smell can linger in your home for a long period of time, and in some cases permanently. These smoke particles can also irritate your lungs and cause health problems if not cleaned up properly.

Respiratory issues have been found to be associated with the improper treatment of smoke damage. Knowing which areas of your home have been damaged by smoke can very difficult. This is due to some smoke particles being microscopic which can be invisible to the naked eye. With every breath you take, you can be inhaling soot and smoke particles. The air can contain toxic elements that can severely damage your lungs. You may notice that you are coughing or wheezing for no particular reason.

Eye irritation can also be a result of smoke exposure. Fine smoke particles can cause you to have a burning sensation in your eyes. In some extreme cases, the eyes may even swell and it can affect your vision. Seek medical attention if this occurs.

Flood Damage

Flooding can cause extensive damage to your home. The water not only can saturate and destroy your home and its contents but also threaten it with secondary damages such as mold damage. Once the water has receded, you may assume that mopping up the water and placing some fans to dry the area is sufficient enough to keep damage at bay, but depending on the extent of the damage your home may need more than that.  A professional restoration company can accurately assess the damage and create the most efficient mitigation plan to turn your house into a home again. Quickly addressing water damage greatly reduces secondary damaged from occurring.

Water damage left unaddressed may cause mold damage which can occur in as little as 48 hours after water entered your home. Drywall and flooring are particularly susceptible to water damage due to their porous materials. A professional restoration company can make sure that all building materials in your home are cleaned thoroughly and efficiently to minimize the amount of your property need to be discarded or replaced.

Mold is silent and often rears its ugly head after flooding. If the moisture is not removed completely, mold can easily develop, multiply and infest your home. As it grows, it releases spores into the air that can be inhaled by the occupants of the house. These spores can cause serious health problems, especially for those who already have respiratory issues such as asthma. People with allergies, infants, children and the elderly are especially at risk of being harmed by the presence of mold. Every inch of the flooded area must be properly dried and sanitized so that mold is not allowed to prosper.

Safety

Whether you have experienced damage from fire, flood, broken pipe or another natural disaster, safety should always be the number one concern. If you have not had a professional assess the damage to your home, there could be a ticking time bomb just waiting to cause havoc in your home. It might be that your floor has been weakened during flooding and it could collapse. Not to mention the damaging effect on your health associated with mold or smoke exposure. After a storm, your roof may be left vulnerable and a quick repair might be all that you need to avoid extreme and costly damages. Having your home properly cleaned and restored by a professional will help keep you and your family safe.

The damaged by a natural disaster or a fire is upsetting and stressful enough. It can be hard to think of spending money on repairs and restoration when you think that you may be able to do it yourself. However, the money should be considered an investment. You are investing in the health and safety of yourself and your family, the structural integrity of your home and the contents within. If you have been affected by a disaster, call a SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties professionals today to get your home quickly restored.

The Weather Outside Is Frightful

Snowflake But The Snow Is So Delightful

The splendor of seasonal snowfall is a beautiful sight to see, but something sinister is sneaking behind those flakes…snowmelt.  Dramatic temperature swings are a common occurrence. When periods of significant snowfall are amongst these weather patterns the risk of home and property damage from snow accumulation intensifies. Snow tends to accumulate in areas that are not often impacted by rainfall which can expose vulnerabilities in roofs, walls, and foundations. When repeated instances of freeze and thaw occur the opportunity for devastation increases dramatically. Here are a few tips that might protect your home from the abdominal snowmelt.

  • Remove snow from around your home: snow accumulation near your foundation, windows, and doors can leak into your home once it starts to melt. Remember to shovel any decks, driveways or patios that slope towards your home.
  • Check your roof and gutters: consider hiring a professional to remove the snow from your roof so that water run-off is at a minimum once temperatures rise. If that's not possible, be sure that your gutters are clear so that the water will have a path away from your home. If possible, attach a sloped leader to your downspout that leads run-off at least 10ft from your home.
  • Test your sump pump: if water does get into your basement, you want to be sure it is taken care of quickly. Before the snow starts to melt, test your sump pump and your sump pump discharge pipe to ensure it's in working order.
  • Clear snow from drainage areas: storm drains and catch basins can often get clogged with snow — if you can do so safely, clearing snow from these areas can help keep water away from your home.
  • Rearrange your storage: in case water does get into your basement, be sure to keep any valuables, chemicals, or anything else you'd like to keep dry off the floor.
  • Check your appliances: clear out space around your water heater, furnace, and other appliances. If possible, raising your washer and dryer off the floor could help protect from water damage.
  • Don't try to do too much: getting on ladders or your roof at any time of the year is a risky proposition, even more so when there is snow involved. Clearing snow and gutters is important in the prevention of water damage, but be sure to use a professional to handle any dangerous situations.

How Landscaping Can Help Protect a Home From Flooding

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

Many homeowners think of landscape design as a way to improve the aesthetics of their property and enhance their enjoyment of the surrounding nature, but landscaping can also help protect a home from flooding. Outside flooding can destroy the lawn and garden around a house and increases the risk of water damage inside the home. These three tips can help you decrease your chances of flooding.

1. Make Sure Water Drains Away From the House

It’s important to check your downspout before the rainstorm comes. Not only do you want to look for and repair any damages, but you should also ensure that water drains away from the house. In addition to the standard downspouts used in home construction, there are also ornamental rain drainage systems that can help direct the water even further away from the house. Diverting this water to a garden bed, or another porous surface can also help prevent flooding.

2. Check That Rain Water Has Somewhere To Go

Outside flooding occurs when rainwater does not have a clear path to a drainage source or when water cannot be absorbed into the ground around the house. As part of your landscaping, you can install other drainage sources such as sub-surface drains or catch basins. You could also install a dry streambed or a swale on a sloped surface to create a path for the water to flow away from the house.

3. Ensure That Your Mulch Can Withstand Heavy Rains

Lightweight mulch can easily float away in a rainstorm. This mulch is harder to clean up after a storm, and during a storm, it can clog drains and result in flooding. Using heavier mulch that stays in place may help avoid these problems.

Picking and Maintaining The Perfect Christmas Tree

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

When Picking Your Tree:

  • Check the trunk for stickiness
  • Check limbs for flexibility
  • Tap trunk of tree on the ground, if a lot of needles fall off, it's not a fresh tree

Maintaining Your Tree:

  • Cut 2" off of the trunk to get to the "Fresh Meat" so it can soak up water (DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP)
  • Make sure the water in your tree stand stays above the bottom of the trunk
  • Once the trunk is soaking in water, there should be no reason to refill the stand

A real Christmas Tree can fill your home with the smell of Christmas however, properly hydrating your tree is one of the most important parts of preventing Christmas tree fires! Please keep this in mind when searching for that perfect tree!

Top 5 Causes Of House Fires

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

Here are the top 5 most common causes of house fires as identified by the National Fire Protection Association.

  1. Candles

From 2007-2011, the NFPA says there was an average of 10,630 fires in the U.S. that were started by candles, causing 115 deaths, 903 injuries and approximately $418 million in property damage.

  • Make sure you have the right cord for the job – inside cords for inside, heavy-duty/outside cords for outdoor use.
  • Don’t leave Christmas lights, Christmas trees, or halogen lights on overnight or when not at home.
  • Consider having an electrician perform an annual checkup of your home’s wiring.

  • Clean the vent pipe and the area where the screen is housed.
  • Keep the area around the dryer free of combustible materials.
  1. Lightning

From 2007-2011, NFPA says there was an average of 22,600 fires per year caused by lightning strikes.

Safety tips:

  • Stay away from doors and windows during an electrical storm.
  • Do not use corded phones, computers, TVs or other electrical equipment during storms.
  • Unplug major electronics – TVs, stereo equipment, computers, and microwaves to minimize damage if there is a lightning strike close by.
  • Avoid plumbing such as sinks, baths, and faucets during a thunderstorm.

When Your House Sets Ablaze

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

A fire can happen at any time. Being prepared will help reduce its devastating effects. The first few minutes following a fire are the most significant. If you do not act quickly, there can be consequences; the correct response to a fire can keep effects minimal.

When a fire occurs, notify the fire department, the police department, and the insurance company. Next, call a disaster restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties to help prevent further damage.

By evaluating the materials and surfaces affected, a disaster restoration company will provide an understanding of the fire's chemistry and allow for a targeted, informed restoration effort. Even though each fire's chemistry differs, one of the most important things disaster restoration companies do immediately is wipe down the affected areas to avoid further damage caused by humidity and acidic residues. They will use air scrubbers, which are highly filtered air machines, so soot particles will not recontaminate air and will limit the redistribution of contaminated particles while restoration work continues. They will pull all filters from the HVAC system, clean and recondition the system, and then install new filters.

A fire is usually a complex fire, the result of incomplete combustion and fueled by synthetic materials, including those found in carpets, furniture, plumbing, and other equipment. Complex fires cause the most damage and leave the most waste, but disaster restoration professionals can professionally handle the cleanup and restoration.

In order to be certified, a company must be insured, have the required tools for the jobs and technicians who have proven their expertise through a rigorous exam.

Benefits a Water Expert Provides

Clean Business = More Productivity

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

As studies show that a clean workplace can improve morale and increase the productivity of the workers, it is important to know that your workplace is as effective as it can be in this regard. An office can seem to be busing along at full efficiency on the surface, people are sitting nose to the grindstone working hard and “getting on with it”, but is that actually what is going on or is this image just what is expected?

If people are not happy in their workplace they often hunker down and look very busy, but the truth may be totally different. If the person who is hunkered down is suffering from low morale, feeling unappreciated and does not want to be there, how would you tell and would it really matter if they are getting on with their job? Well, actually yes it does matter, it matters a lot.

You see someone who is feeling like that is working hard but they are not being as productive as they could be. Their mind is distracted. They would rather be somewhere else, anywhere else but here, and that is ticking along in the back of their mind. They are robotically carrying out procedures and completing tasks but there is no flair, no imagination, and most importantly no incentive. To be honest they do not really care whether what they do is constructive or not. You see people who have to work in a dirty environment feel that the bosses do not care. They feel like numbers, not people and as such, they have no real loyalty to the business or drive to excel.

If this was true of your sales office you would not be making many sales. Salespeople need to have energy and drive, they need to have a desire to pull in the customers and to seal that deal. They can only do this in a clean fresh environment. Even if they come in first thing in the morning all rearing to go, a dirty environment will gradually bring them down. Not even consciously, but by mid-morning or lunchtime they will be feeling deflated as they look for things behind and around yesterday’s dirty mugs, or paper cups that will not fit in the recycling bin.

So it is very important that your employees have a clean workplace, clean toilets and clean rest areas, and kitchens. This will not only improve their morale, lift their energy and make them feel pleased to work here, it will also keep germs at bay so that people are working in a much healthier environment and this will show by fewer absentees.

It's That Time Of Year Again

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

Extreme cold weather can be hard on both you and your home. Here are some tips to help in preparing for the cold months ahead.

How to Deal with Frozen Pipes

  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses.
  • Cover outside faucets with insulating foam covers.
  • Let your faucets drip just a bit at night to prevent the temperatures at night from freezing your pipes
  •  Turn off water to outside faucets, if available, and open valves on faucets to allow them to drain
  •  Turn off the sprinkler system and blow compressed air through the lines to drain them.

These are just a few tips to take into consideration when performing fall cleanup in getting your property prepared in Gaylord for the freezing ice and snow that we are experienced with!  These tips can help prevent frozen pipes and water damage throughout your home or business.

Winter Temperatures Are Upon Us

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

Winter is approaching the Chicagoland area sooner than usual this year.  SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties want to help keep you safe in the event of a snowstorm.  Here are some tips form the American Red Cross to help keep you safe and get you ready for traveling in the cold weather:

  • Talk with your family about what to do if a winter storm watch or warning is issued.
  • Have your vehicle winterized before the winter storm season to decrease your chance of being stranded in cold weather.
  • Have a mechanic check your battery, antifreeze, wipers and windshield fluid, ignition system, thermostat, lights, flashing hazard lights, exhaust system, heater, brakes, defroster, and oil.
  • Keep in your vehicle: a windshield scraper, small broom, matches in a waterproof container, an emergency supply kit, including warm clothing.
  • Keep your gas tank full so you can leave right away in an emergency.
  • Have a cell phone with you and make sure the battery is charged.
  • Pack a warm coat, gloves and a hat.

Can You Dry Hardwood Floors After A Water Damage?

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding The Process Of Cleaning Up Smoke Damage

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke damage can often be one of the most widespread effects to contend within your home after a fire disaster. While there are many other concerns, such as structural weaknesses that often take precedent for restorations and mitigation, restoring damage to your property should be a focus of whatever professional outfit you choose. Our team can arrive quickly to help lessen the damage and prolonged impact of a fire emergency, and work to eliminate the presence of smoke damage.

Much of the cleanup and restoration for these results in your home focus on odor removal. Indoor air quality is also a primary focus for our SERVPRO® professionals dispatched to your home once the first responders have left. We work quickly to establish our purification equipment such as air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators to run the available air through HEPA filters overtime to begin pulling smoke particles and soot from the environment and reducing hazards or risks of exposure without respirators.

Smoke damage often depends on the type of smoke that affected your home throughout the fire. Dry smoke results from high heat, but is also a residue that is much easier for our SERVPRO technicians to clean with dry and wet sponges on the coated surfaces. Wet smoke leaves a thick residue on surfaces and contents, which often requires specialized equipment to clean and deodorize fully. The heat generated by a house fire plays a key role in the actual penetration of soot particles into porous materials like drywall and fabrics.

Improving the scent of your home after a fire is also a concern for our team, but these steps often follow reconstruction and other restoration efforts. Waiting for deodorization allows our technicians to leave your home completely cleaned and odor-free. Our thermal foggers can often do the greatest amount of deodorization, as these machines are suitable to use in open areas, fabrics, soft materials, and work to remove odors from surfaces as well.

Smoke can provide many damaging effects to your home after a fire emergency. Our SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties' response team has the expertise and tools to help. Give us a call today at (606) 836-8000

Does Your Home Have A Mold Problem?

8/15/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Addressing Your Water Loss

8/12/2019 (Permalink)

Whenever a homeowner has a water loss, it is important to understand the damage the water can do, and how to asses it properly. One of the first things that SERVPRO does after meeting the homeowner is to inspect all affected materials in all affected areas. This allows us to gauge what is wet and how wet the material actually is. SERVPRO technicians use moisture meters and thermal cameras to map out the wet area. Most homeowners don’t own this equipment so they may not be able to see the full damage, but it is possible to get a general idea if one knows what to look for and understands how water travels.

Having the appropriate equipment and tools are essential for the quality of work performed. We see many homeowners extract water with a wet vac and place office fan’s around the wet area. This is a great start to prevent further damage, but the equipment used will not have the same efficiency as ours. When SERVPRO needs to remove a material we are trained on removing it in a specific way. We want to make the repair as easy and as quick as possible.

Depending on what material we are trying to dry and the saturation level of the material could call for a specialized drying plan with more equipment than the traditional box fan and dehumidifier. Our goal is to get all 10’s with the customer satisfaction survey. Assessing the damage correctly and having the correct equipment is a must.  Meeting the expectations makes the mitigation process faster and cheaper.

Avoiding A Water Loss When You're Not Home

8/12/2019 (Permalink)

No matter what time of year it is, if you’re going to be away from your home for an extended amount of time – even just overnight – it’s a smart idea to turn off your water until you return home. Why? Because it doesn’t take very much water to cause a whole lot of damage! If your pipes freeze and burst while you’re gone, or if a washer hose ruptures or a supply line leaks, major water damage can occur! There are a few things you can do before heading out of town to give you peace of mind when it comes to the state of your home’s water.

Shut off the Main Water Valve

Your safest bet is to turn off the main water valve. Make sure the adults in your home know where the main shutoff valve is and know how to turn it on and off. (Knowing this will also come in handy if you’re at home during an emergency, so the water can quickly be shut off!) Locate the main water valve near your water meter usually located in the basement, near the front of the house, attached to the outside of the home’s exterior, or in an underground box in the yard.

There are two types of main shutoff valves. You’ll probably find what’s called a “gate valve” if you’re in an older home. Turn the rounded handles a certain number of times to open or close the valve. The “ball valve” is more common today. Turn the lever-like handle 90 degrees to turn the water on or off. If this valve crosses the pipes, it’s closed; if it’s parallel to them, it’s open.

Test shutting off the valve ahead of time by locating the main shutoff valve, turning it off, and running a faucet. If no water comes out, you’ve successfully turned off your home’s water supply!

Turn off Individual Water Valves

But what if you’re leaving during the summer and you can’t turn off your entire water supply because you have automatic sprinklers? If this is the case, you can simply turn off individual water valves to the water sources with the highest damage risk. These sources include the dishwasher, washing machine, and ice-maker. Individual shutoff valves tend to be located directly on the supply lines leading to most appliances, including toilets and faucets. Usually, this will be a small rounded handle that you’ll turn clockwise. Doing this will turn off the water to that source. (Take note that the ice-maker shutoff valve may be under the sink or in the basement!)

If you’ll be shutting off individual water supplies, it’s a good idea to kill two birds with one stone and check your supply lines themselves. They can become weak over time, resulting in leaks, cracks, or bulging. If you notice these or other forms of corrosion, you may want to repair or replace them before leaving.

Turn off Water Supply to Outdoor Faucets

If you’re leaving during the colder seasons, it’s a good idea to also shut off the water to your outdoor faucets as well. Their shutoff valve will most likely be located inside your house. Shut it off before you head out the door. Once you’ve shut off the valve, turn on the exterior faucet to drain any excess water. And remember to detach the hoses, too!

What To Do When Fire Strikes Your Business

8/12/2019 (Permalink)

When a fire strikes your commercial property, it's quite likely that you feel yourself start to panic. This immediate reaction makes sense given all of the economic turmoil and property destruction that a fire can cause. However, knowing which steps to take in the face of a Treasure Valley commercial fire can help prevent you from becoming anxious, losing money, and undergoing extensive property damages. To handle a treasure valley commercial fire successfully and speedily, implement the following four tips:

1. Contact A Fire Remediation Expert.
Once the fire department has doused all of the flames, be sure to call a fire remediation expert. This individual will be able to equip you with a thorough assessment indicating the extent of the damages. Don't ever attempt to handle any of the cleanups, drying, or restoration processes on your own. Doing so could put you in peril of injury and illness.

2. Assemble Your Records.
In addition to contacting a fire remediation expert, make sure that you assemble your business's essential records. You'll want to have this information with you when you start working with your insurance company. To guarantee that you can have all of your files ready in a safe place, make a point to buy a fireproof safe where they can be stored.

3. Call The Insurance Company Immediately.
Be sure that you call your insurance company once the fire is put out. This step is important because your insurance agent will work with you to file a claim and determine how much coverage you'll attain for the commercial damages.

4. Get Permission To Reenter The Building.
Always ask the fire department or another local authority whether you can reenter your building. In some cases, Treasure valley fires can weaken the structural integrity of the commercial property and make it subject to collapse. This is why you need to assure that reentry is safe for you and your employees.

The Unseen Damage From Hail

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

In 2016, the United States experienced 5,601 severe hail storms, as documented by the NOAA Severe Weather Database. Hail can range in size from the size of pencil tip to the size of a softball.

Many homeowners are not aware of hail damage on their roofs. Hail damage to roof tops often times cannot be seen from the ground, and that’s a big reason why the idea of hail damage hardly ever crosses a homeowner’s mind.

Tell-Tale Signs of Hail Damage on a Roof

Although you cannot fully determine the amount of hail damage on a roof from the ground, there are some signs that a trained eye can point out and help determine if there may be more damage up top. Here are a few things to look for.

  1. Dented gutters, gutter screens, or downspouts
  2. Damage to siding and windowsills/casings
  3. Damage to air conditioners or other outdoor items
  4. Damage to decks or painted wood surfaces

Once you are on the roof check for these signs of roof damage:

  1. Dented vents, chimneys, or sky light covers
  2. Dented or damages shingles. (This may be the most important to check for.)

Dented or damages shingles are what leads to a damages and potentially leaky roof.

Fire Safety Escape Plan, Do you Have One?

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

EVERY SECOND COUNTS!

In 2016 there were an estimated 364,300 reported residential fire and 2,000 fire related fatalities. In the event of fire, TIME is the BIGGEST ENEMY and EVERY SECOND COUNTS! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire.  The most important thing you can do to prepare is have a Safety Escape Plan.

At Home Fire Safety Plan Tips

First and foremost, make sure you have one working smoke alarm on every level of the home, as well as inside and outside each sleeping area.

Have two ways out of each room, and the proper equipment to get out any upper story windows. Walk through each room in your home with your family and point out possible exits. Also, provide alternatives for anyone with a disability.

Once you have established the exits, practice and show children how to get out of the house and check the door for heat before opening it.

Know to crawl low to the floor when escaping to avoid toxic smoke. Practice dropping to your stomach and shimmying out under the smoke with your children.

Make a plan to help pets evacuate safely as well if possible.

Once you are out of the house, STAY OUT. DO NOT go back in the house. There could be unseen damage and danger. Call 911 immediately.

Know where to meet after the escape. Your meeting place should be near the front of your home so firefighters know you are out.

Practice, Practice, Practice your escape plan. It is recommended you practice at least twice a year.  If you have young children it may require more than twice.  Practicing can save the lives of you and your family.

First Aid Everyone Should Know

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding Water Types

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.

There are three types of water.  Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean.  The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water.  Clean water becomes gray water when left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous.  Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more.  Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster.  Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

Considering taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

· Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.

· Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel as safe from potential electrical shock.  Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.

· Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.  Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and table top items.

· Remove and prop up upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.

· Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.

· Do not leave books, magazines, newspapers or other colored items on wet carpet or floors as they may cause staining.

· Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner

· Do not turn ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from the retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water

· Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage.  Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.

· Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.

· Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.

· Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

When you have water damage, don't leave your property to chance. Call SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties to help you make it "Like it never even happened."

TIps to Prevent Frozen Pipes

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Cold temperatures are inevitable.  When freezing temperatures hit, here are some helpful prevention tips:

  • When you know temperatures will be dipping below freezing, allow water to run in all the sinks at a slow, constant drip. It only needs to trickle, and that tiny amount of water will keep the water moving through the pipes and prevent them from freezing.
  • Open up the cabinet doors in the bathrooms and kitchen. This will allow the heat from the home to circulate and warm up the pipes.
  • Keep the garage door closed to keep garage pipes from freezing.
  • Keep your house at a warm, consistent temperature both day and night.
  • If you leave your home for extended periods of time, do not set your thermostat lower than 55 degrees.
  • If you do end up with frozen pipes, a hand-held hair dryer or heat lamp can thaw them.

Commercial Fire Damage Experts Talk About Cleaning Items Off-Site

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Fire Damage

It is always a possibility that a disaster like a fire can take place at your Somersworth gift shop. Even if the blaze happens on a different floor of your building, commercial fire damage can still occur. When something burns inside another unit, things inside your store can burn as well. Smoke coming from the blaze above or next to you can also cause problems with your property. Both the heat and smoke coming from any building near you can cause commercial fire damage to your gift store.

Elements created during a fire such as excessive heat and smoke can create issues with both your building's structural components and the products inside your store.  SERVPRO technicians separate the problems into two categories. Problems that occur with things permanently attached to your structure such as carpet and walls are considered structural issues. Any item that gets ruined that is not attached to the building such as shelving units, or your products is put into the "contents" category.

In many cases, a fire can ruin both building materials and your possessions. In these situations, our SERVPRO technicians usually choose to mitigate issues with the items separately. Your contents get cleaned either in unaffected areas of your property or at a third location. Moving items out of areas where the structure is burnt will reduce secondary problems caused during the cleaning or demolition process.

The first step we take when moving out your damaged contents is to make an inventory list of all affected items. Next, our SERVPRO crew carefully packs up each item and puts it in a labeled box. Then, the contents get moved out to a clean storage location. Once we are ready to clean or treat each item individually, we move your contents into a cleaning location that has been cleaned and disinfected.

We take special care of each of your products and ensure that they are clean of any soot or soils created by the fire. If foul odors remain inside your contents, then we can use an ozone machine or ULV fogger to deodorize the objects. If you ever get affected by a structure fire call SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties

Mitigation Of Water Damage

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Professional Mold Remediation

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

As a small business owner, keeping on top of property maintenance can be time-consuming. In some of the city's older buildings maintenance can often be taken out of your hands by the appearance of mold. For businesses that sell food or drinks, the odor of mold can be a health hazard and put off your customers. In these instances, it is essential to bring in a professional who not only removes the visible signs of mold growth but also tackles it at the source.

In our experience moisture residing inside walls or behind fittings causes commercial mold damage. SERVPRO is a specialist in dealing with mold growth and uses advanced equipment to not only remove visible damage but also the damage you cannot see. Without taking this two-pronged approach, fungi can return again and again.

We use IICRC certified technicians in mold assessment and remediation. Laboratory testing can be expensive, so the visible signs of fungi or unpleasant odors are enough to begin the remediation process. As a local service with access to national resources we use state-of-the-art equipment to help get your business back to its best; making the damage "Like it never even happened."

Injectidry systems are one of the most effective ways of tackling mold at the source. This equipment requires some drilling into drywall to allow access for each injector. Injectors are then hooked up to a generator that blasts heated dry air inside the wall, evaporating moisture pockets and limiting the conditions for mold growth. As a business owner, using an approach like this can help to save money in the long run by dealing with the issue comprehensively.

Your SERVPRO technician can use a moisture meter to detect where moisture could reside as well as measuring indoor humidity levels and returning it to its natural state by deploying dehumidifiers in the affected area. As the service takes place you, the property manager, has direct access to a SERVPRO project manager who can guide you through each step as well as discuss the expected outcomes.

Our Guide To Successfully Restoring Your Fire Damaged Home

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Crew Discusses The Restoration Process

If a fire ever takes place on your property in Dover, it is a good idea to call in a professional restoration company like SERVPRO. In many cases, the fire damage can get worse if it is not attended to quickly by experienced technicians. Soot residues can permanently stain surfaces and be harder to remove if not treated promptly. The longer burnt smells exist in a building, the more difficult they will be to remove. In some fire damage situations, water can be an issue if it was used to extinguish the blaze.

Since we know that time is vital, our SERVPRO team responds to every emergency call we receive as quickly as possible. Even though every fire damage project is different, our team always follows the same procedure to make sure all bases are covered. The process always follows a set of steps that ensure we do the best job we can.

The first step of our restoration process starts with the first phone call. Once you call us and tell us you have a problem we take all of your contact information and figure out as much as we can about your situation over the phone. We then schedule a time to come to your home and proceed to the next step.

Next, we arrive at your home and get the remainder of the information we need from you. We find out from you everything that happened so that we get a good idea of where we need to inspect. Then, we go throughout your house and inspect for problems. We also test affected areas and try to figure out if affected materials are cleanable or not.

We then make an initial estimate for you and your insurance adjuster that gives a good idea of the work involved. We outline what we think needs to be replaced and what we think we can save. Next, we schedule all of the working procedures with you and begin the restoration procedures.

Keeping The Dampness Away After Flood Damage

12/10/2018 (Permalink)

Keeping The Dampness Away After A Flood

Flooding and other intrusive water can damage a Somersworth home rapidly, showing visible signs immediately. Other damage that continues unabated within the hidden areas of a home's interior cavities can lead to severe infestations of microbes, allow insect pests to nest and burrow in softened materials, and create unwanted odors.

Residents in Somersworth might find that elevated humidity in their home continues to occur after they experience flood damage to their property. This can happen when small pockets of moisture in your home go undetected. One common location is lower surfaces in basement floors. SERVPRO's technicians are IICRC Certified to get these areas dry for you and protect your home from the continued negative effects of damage from flooding.

Water that continued to seep into damaged areas of your home's basement after a flood can smell particularly dank because of the additional odors picked up from the soil underneath your home. Even though the soil can act as a filter, the water's odor and still smell foul, even though it no longer smells like floodwater. The soil around homes that experienced flooding can become so saturated their foundations sometimes move. The pressure can become extremely intense.

If flood damage seems to revisit your home again a short time after mitigation workers complete the initial work, we can help restore your home, so odors and continued damp conditions no longer occur. Desiccant machines can prove highly effective in these situations, as can our air scrubbers. Our Odor Control Technician (OCT) can run machines that produce either ozone and hydroxyl gases to eliminate odors from further bothering you and your family.

Eliminating dangerous excess moisture in your home accomplishes more than hindering the growth of microbial and other infestations and keeping your home smelling normal – it also protects occupants from inhaling damp air. SERVPRO technicians can quickly remove any additional materials damaged by this leftover flood damage, test and treat for any microbial activity, and also use different odor-controlling techniques that leave your home smelling “Like it never even happened.”

Water in your Crawl Space?

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Water in your crawl space can cause damage to your home

Excessive moisture in a crawl space can cause your foundation supports to warp and lose their structural integrity.

Excessive moisture can promote the growth of Mold and Mildew.

Standing water can attract pests and small animals.

What to do when you have water in your crawl space

Have a professional inspect your crawl space for foundation cracks and broken pipes.

Dry out the crawl space by removing the excess water and moisture.

Clean up the crawl space by removing debris and wet insulation.

When to Call A Professional

Water mitigation is not a challenging task, but it is hard, physical labor. You might want to consider the following:

A crawl space that is between 4 feet and 5 feet high is considered tall. Even such a tall crawlspace is very difficult to move around in. Many crawl spaces are lower than this.

Tight Access Point of entry makes it difficult to work in the crawl space. There may be only one small door that allows access to the crawl space, and can sometimes be in an inconvenient area, such as a bedroom closet or kitchen pantry floor.

Warning:  Rodents can often get into the crawl space.  Their droppings can contain harmful bacteria.

Is My Sump Pump Working?

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

Sump pump fails and causes water damage while you are out of town

Some Facts About Water

11/6/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to water damage to a residential or commercial property, there is more than meets the eye.

Here are some water facts and figures as they pertain to the restoration industry:

1. Water is capable of dissolving a variety of different substances. In fact, water is known as the “universal solvent” because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid.

2. A sheet of drywall standing upright with its edge sitting in a ½” of water can wick water up to 6 inches in less than three hours.

3. Mold typically begins to grow in 24 to 48 hours in an untreated moist environment.

4. A good indication of a failing hot water heater is a puddle of water underneath it, indicating a slow leak, or rusted or corroded fittings on the top of the heater. If you don’t investigate the leak ASAP, you may quickly flood your home because water heaters are under a great deal of water pressure.

5. There are three categories of water contamination defined in the restoration industry:

  • Category One – Water from a clean water source with no substantial risk of causing sickness or discomfort. Examples include water from a broken water supply pipe or an overflowing bath tub.
  • Category Two – Water that has a significant degree of chemical, biological, and/or physical contamination. Examples include water from aquariums, dishwasher or clothes washer leaks, and water entering the structure from below grade. Discharged Category One water that sits untreated more for more than 24 hours becomes Category Two.
  • Category Three – Water emanating from a grossly unsanitary source or carrying disease causing agents. Examples include discharges from sewer or septic systems/pipes and flood waters. Discharged Category One water that sits more for more than 48 hours becomes Category Three. Discharged Category Two water that sits more for more than 24 hours becomes Category Three.

Renters Insurance

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Grease Fire

The number of renters has grown dramatically in some of the most populous—and disaster-prone—U.S. cities, yet few renters actually purchase insurance, according to theInsurance Information Institute(I.I.I.)

Indeed, only 37 percent of renters have renters insurance whereas 95 percent of homeowners have a homeowners insurance policy, according to a 2014 I.I.I. poll conducted by ORC International.

“Renters insurance provides a very important financial safety net when there is a disaster,” points out Jeanne M. Salvatore, senior vice president and chief communications officer for the I.I.I. “And, renters insurance is relatively inexpensive—the average cost of a renter’s policy is only $187 per year, or less than four dollars per week.”

If you own expensive jewelry, collectibles, musical instruments or even high-end sports equipment, you may want to add a floater or endorsement to your renters policy. This would provide broader coverage for risks such as “mysterious disappearance.” So even if you lose the item, you would be covered.

As a renter, insurance is a must!

Severe Fire Damage

SERVPRO Employees scoping fire loss that did severe damaged to main level of the house.  The tenant that lived hear had no renters insurance.  All of their belongings (TV's, childrens toys, beds, clothing, furniture and food) were destroyed due to soot and high heat damage or burned by the fire.  The cost to demo, clean and rebuild the structure to pre loss condition will be around $50,000.00

According to Insurance Information Institute

“Many renters are under the misconception that their landlord’s insurance policy will reimburse them if their personal property is damaged or destroyed, but that’s just not the case,” says Salvatore. “Fortunately, renters have a range of insurance options to choose from.”

Renters insurance provides financial protection against damage to or loss of personal possessions due to hurricanes, fire, lightning, theft, explosion and other disasters listed in the policy. There is even coverage for water damage caused by burst pipes or a neighbor who forgets to shut off the water in the tub. Coverage is available on either an actual cash value basis (depreciated value) or for its replacement cost (no deduction for depreciation). Renters insurance does NOT cover flooding and earthquake, but separate policies can be purchased for these events.

Ordinary Mold

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

If you discover mold in your home there are many questions that arise.  Here's a little bit of information about ordinary mold that can help your understanding of the issue.

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.  Fungi produce some very useful results.  Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages.  The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold.  An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum).

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

  • The presence of visible mold.
  • Strong musty odors which may indicate mold is present.
  • Any evidence of past moisture problems that might have caused undetected mold growth.
  • Excessive humidity.

Moisture and Mold Solutions

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Indoor humidity levels between 30% and 50% are ideal.

Moisture problems in your home have a variety of causes and can lead to major property damage and encourage harmful mold and mildew growth.

Common causes of Moisture and Mold in your home can be:

  • Water from a leaking water pipe, toilet, shower or bathtub, also weather related flooding in your home. Depending on the severity, conditions can lead to rot, structural damage, premature paint failure, and a variety of health problems.

  • Excessive moisture from condensation and high humidity can have negative effects on your property and may indicate poor ventilation or that repairs are needed.

  • Water can seep into your house from the outside through a leak in your roof, foundation, or small gaps around windows or doors.

  • Normal activities such as cooking, bathing, clothes drying and dish washing also add moisture to the air.

All of these common problems contribute to overall high indoor humidity levels leading to mold and mildew growth. Mold can grow quickly and spread fast if moisture is left untreated, under ideal conditions (optimal temperature and level of humidity) it takes 24-48 hours for mold growth to occur. Typically you will start to see visible mold in 12-20 days, the more time passes the greater chance for mold to develop and spread through your property.

When SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties arrives at your home, we can swiftly inspect the mold damage and then identify a remediation strategy. The first step to containing the problem is to set up plastic sheeting, block vents and doorways, so the spores cannot spread while the colony is being removed.

Certified professionals have the training and experience to:

  • Identify moisture sources
  • Evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected)
  • Contain damage to the smallest area possible
  • Physically remove contamination
  • Dry materials to ensure that mold will not return
  • Perform or recommend procedures for returning property to a preloss condition

It is a good idea to inspect your home or business regularly for any damage caused by moisture, if you notice any problems, take immediate action to fix them before they cause further damage or balloon into larger, more complicated issues. Here are some way you can reduce moisture and prevent damage in your home from water and mold.

  • Install vent fans in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Run a dehumidifier.
  • Cover dirt floors in crawl spaces with a plastic vapor barrier.
  • Seal air and duct leaks.
  • Houseplants can absorb moisture from the air
  • Never let wet clothing or other fabrics lie around
  • Avoid activities that add moisture to the air on humid days, such as taking hot showers and boiling water on the stove.

Indoor plants that help absorb moisture:

These are perfect plants to have in your home or business to help decrease moisture in the air, with the added bonus of purifying your air of certain contaminants at the same time.

Reed Palms, English Ivy, and Boston Ferns

These plants will reduce humidity levels by absorbing moisture from the air through their leaves.

Preparing for Intense Storms

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season produced 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and six major hurricanes, including three Category 4 hurricanes that made landfall in the United States: Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. It was the most active season since 1936.

When it comes to hurricanes, most of the overwhelming damage, is from the "very few strongest storms," Mann said. "What matters is how many Category 3, 4, and 5 storms we get, and we're likely to see more of those storms, and more damage… as a result." —Penn State climate scientist Michael Mann

Hurricanes are massive storm systems that form over warm ocean waters and move toward land. Potential threats from hurricanes include powerful winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, tornadoes, and landslides. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

Knowing the category of a hurricane can help you understand how threatening it may be.

Category 1: Winds range from 74 to 95 mph and can be expected to produce some minor damage to property. Injuries to people and animals are generally isolated and limited to flying or falling debris. During a Category 1 storm, protected glass windows generally remain intact. Some roof damage to frame homes, apartments, and shopping centers can also occur, as well as short-term power outages due to snapped power lines and downed trees.

Category 2: Winds range from 96 to 110 mph and can be expected to produce extensive property damage. Greater wind velocities mean that debris poses a greater threat to humans and animals, while the roofing, siding, and glass windows (protected and unprotected) of frame homes are more vulnerable to damage. In a Category 2 storm, significant structural damage to apartment buildings, mobile homes, and shopping centers is also expected, as well as flooding in low-lying areas. Extensive power outages ranging from a few days to a few weeks are common, and residents are encouraged to stock up on potable water as filtration systems also fail during this time.

Category 3: Winds ranging from 111 to 130 mph cause significant damage to property, humans, and animals. Mobile and poorly constructed frame homes are often destroyed, and even well-built frame homes commonly sustain major damage. Significant damage to apartments and shopping centers (even those made of wood or steel) can be expected. Category 3 storms can also cause extensive inland flooding. Electricity and water are commonly unavailable for several days to several weeks after the storm, therefore it’s important for residents to have their own stores of canned food and water.

Category 4: Winds range from 131 to 155 mph and can cause catastrophic damage to property, humans, and animals. Severe structural damage to frame homes, apartments, and shopping centers should be expected. Category 4 hurricanes often include long-term power outages and water shortages lasting from a few weeks to a few months, so again, it’s important for any remaining residents to have a significant nonperishable food and water supply at hand.

Category 5: Winds at or greater than 155 mph cause catastrophic damage to property, humans, and animals (read: you should be nowhere near this storm!). Complete or almost-complete destruction of mobile homes, frame homes, apartments, and shopping centers should be expected, and nearly all trees in the area will be snapped or uprooted. Power outages can last for weeks and possibly months. Long-term water shortages should be expected as well, and most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months.

The strongest hurricanes, have brought severe water and storm damage to coastal locations, including Southwest Brooklyn and other local Brooklyn areas including, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, and Dyker Heights, while totally disrupting utility power for days across the interior from downed trees and high winds. Both the stronger hurricanes and many of the weaker tropical storms have caused inland river flooding in parts of the New England. History shows that everyone living in southern New England must take tropical storms and hurricanes seriously. Whether you live along the coast, by a river or stream, or far inland, a tropical storm or hurricane striking Southern New England will affect our local area, SERVPRO of Southwest Brooklyn is ready to help you repair your home/business water damage.

The Difference Between a Hurricane Watch and a Hurricane Warning

The difference is 12 HOURS. A watch is issued when a hurricane or tropical storm is possible within 36 hours. A warning is issued when those same conditions are expected within 24 hours.

It’s important to take steps while you have time before a storm arrives to protect the well-being of your family/employees and home/business.

Step 1: Have an Emergency Communication and Evacuation Plan; have a predetermined location both on your property, like the large tree in the front yard, or the family station wagon; and in your local town to meet incase an emergency causes your family to separate. It’s also a good idea to discuss a relative out of town that will be a check-in since it could be difficult to reach others in the same emergency area.

Step 2: Supplies; you should have enough supplies in your home for 72 hours for each member of your family, this includes having specialty items for babies and children or the elderly. You should also have an emergency and first aid kit for your home, your car and each person should have a personal kit for themselves. Another good thing to think about is flashlights, batteries and multiple copies of area maps.

Step 3: Insurance Coverage; consider your coverage for flooding, it’s important to have contact information incase of an emergency and make sure you know what to do if a storm causes damage to your property. If flooding is predicted try and move your vehicles to a safer location. Taking a home inventory can be as simple as snapping cell phone photos of the contents in each of your home’s rooms, and recording the item number or serial number of more important items.

Step 4: Important Documents; you should keep copies of important documents including; proof of ownership for homes, cars and other property. Make sure to keep copies of you and your family’s personal identification and banking information. It’s also a good idea to have some cash available, after a storm getting to an ATM or bank maybe difficult depending on the severity of the damage.

Step 5: Secure Your Property; Experts recommend piling up sandbags at least 2 feet high as an effective barricade against floodwaters. Unplug unused household electronics and appliances, if you are evacuating consider shutting off electricity. Think about trimming trees to reduce any falling limbs and cleaning up things around your home and yard like potted plants, lawn furniture and children’s toys.

Step 6: Electronic Concerns; Aside from keeping extra batteries and chargers around during a hurricane, people are also encouraged to backup any electronic devices. It’s a good idea to store your data at an off-site location.

Common Signs that Water Damage is Lurking in Your Home.

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

If the leak is bad enough, it could cause additional damage to the building structure, including the floor and walls, even if there’s no water present, water spots clearly indicate that pipes under the sink have a slow leak.

Ceiling and wall stains

Ceiling and wall stains are obvious signs of a roof, appliance, or plumbing leak, water saturates insulation and drywall, it can also lead to major water damage, that can compromise the structural integrity of the property. Check your roof for damage, broken tiles or puddling, also investigate appliances such as the washing machine, dishwasher, and toilets for leaky spigots that could be dripping water and causing damage.

Mold growth

Mold needs water to grow, so it’s common to find mold in consistently damp locations—and finding mold is never a good thing, since it means your air quality is suffering. In fact, sensitive individuals may experience unpleasant symptoms such as aggravated allergy symptoms, cold-like issues, and more.

Squishy kitchen/bathroom tiles

Water damage is not always visible. In fact, it’s more common for damage to occur behind the floor, ceiling, and walls where you can’t see it. Since the bathroom is the most humid room in your home, it’s a common place for water damage and mold growth.

Standing water

Many things can cause water to pool in unlikely places, including a broken pipe or flooding. If you find standing water, it’s important to seek water damage remediation as quickly as possible. Ignoring the problem could lead to greater damage to your home’s structural integrity and air quality.

When you are dealing with water damage, call in the experts to help! Does your home or business have a mold problem?

8/17/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent to minimize the chances of mold growth.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.  If you see mold, call us today at 606-836-8000

The Dangers of snow

12/6/2017 (Permalink)

Be safe out there this winter

  • Ice dams forming along the roof can create a backup of water to be forced up under your shingles.

So be safe out there this winter and if any of these thing happen to your home call us at (606) 836-8000 and we will send a crew over.

Heating, holiday decorations, winter storms and candles all contribute to an increased risk of fire during the winter months; Here are a few tips

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

  1. Have your furnace checked. It's worth the money to hire a professional to inspect and service your furnace once a year. If it's going to conk out, it's better to know trouble is co 2. Have your chimneys and vents checked. Fireplaces produce creosote which can ignite. If you light fires frequently, you need a chimney sweep service once a year. When you burn wood, make sure it's dry and seasoned so that it produces more flame and less smoke.
  1. Test smoke alarms. Make sure batteries are fresh. Place smoke alarms in the kitchen, laundry room and in bedrooms.
  1. Cover the fireplace with a screen. Tempered glass or a metal screen helps protect sparks from leaving the fireplace. Even so, make sure that children and pets sit at least three feet away when you light a fire in the fireplace.
  1. Beware of lit candles. Candles can set the mood for relaxation, and that's how they get forgotten or knocked over by kids or pets. Light candles only when you're around to watch them and blow them out when you're ready to leave the room. Ditto for cigarettes, pipes, etc. If you're going to smoke, try to do it outside.
  1. Beware of space heaters. The name should give you a clue -- space heaters need space. Like fireplaces, people and pets should not be allowed to sit any closer than three feet. Don't put space heaters near curtains, tablecloths or other fluttering fabrics. Make sure the space heaters you buy have automatic shut-offs before reaching dangerous temperatures.ming.

Do you have mold?

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

If you suspect you have mold in your home, you're probably right because it needs very little to survive. Cellulose is its favorite food, but it can also subsist on particles of dirt or dust brought into the home on shoes and clothing and needs only a small amount of moisture to begin growing.

When you start looking for mold, check anywhere dark and potentially moist. This includes top-floor ceilings because attics don't receive much light and even a slow roof leak can provide enough water. Also check around window frames that aren't properly sealed. Under the kitchen sink is another favorite place for mold, along with crawlspaces or between cracks in baseboards. Bathrooms are notorious for mold infestations behind leaky shower walls or under bathtubs, but colonies can grow anywhere pipes run behind the wall and moisture is present.

If drywall anywhere in your house feels wet to the touch, has cracking paint, discoloration or is bulging, chances are you have a mold infection.

SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties has all of your mold remediation needs.

See Mold? What should I do?

10/31/2017 (Permalink)

Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away. Seepage into the basement after a heavy rainfall, accumulation from a leaky pipe, even a spill on the carpet should be dried within 24 to 48 hours. If you've experienced a flood, remove water-damaged carpets, bedding, and furniture if they can't be completely dried. Even everyday occurrences need attention: don't leave wet items lying around the house, and make sure to dry the floor and walls after a shower. Don't leave wet clothes in the washing machine, where mold can spread quickly. Hang them to dry — preferably outside or in areas with good air circulation.

Your friendly techs at SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis Counties are here to help.

Tips on Mold Control

10/31/2017 (Permalink)

Direct water away from your home. If the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.

Clean or repair roof gutters. A mold problem might be a simple matter of a roof that is leaking because of full or damaged gutters. Have your roof gutters cleaned regularly and inspected for damage. Repair them as necessary, and keep an eye out for water stains after storms that may indicate a leak.

Improve air flow in your home. According to the EPA, as temperatures drop, the air is able to hold less moisture. Without good air flow in your home, that excess moisture may appear on your walls, windows and floors. To increase circulation, open doors between rooms, move furniture away from walls, and open doors to closets that may be colder than the rooms they’re in. Let fresh air in to reduce moisture and keep mold at bay.

Stay Warm, Stay Safe

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

Staying warm is a must in the winter, but please stay safe.

Alternative Heating Sources May Also Create a Fire Hazard.

  • Avoid using an older space heater, as it may not have adequate safety features compared to newer units. When purchasing a new space heater, ensure it is UL Listed and pay attention to the safety features.
  • Do not place a space heater near furniture, curtains or other objects that could easily catch fire.
  • If you plan to install an alternative heating system, such as a wood or pellet stove, follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you are unsure about how to properly install the system, consider hiring a professional to do the installation.
  • Before installing a wood or pellet stove, check to ensure it complies with the laws of your state and municipality.

Dirty Chimneys Also Pose a Fire Hazard.

  • Have your chimney inspected annually by a Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA)-certified chimney sweep. Have a professional clean and repair the chimney as needed, especially before the cold months, when you will be using it frequently.
  • Use seasoned wood only. Never burn green or damp wood.
  • Never burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, trash or trees in your fireplace—these can all spark chimney fires.

What is mold?

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

Mold can grow anywhere there is moisture.

Mold. The very word is enough to make a person cringe.

Yes, mold can be good — it's essential in making brie and penicillin, for example, and necessary for the decomposition of organic matter in nature — but it can also be very, very bad, especially when it grows undetected in your home.

Mold spores spread easily and cannot be completely eradicated.

Mold can grow anywhere: on carpet, clothing, food, paper, and even in places you can't see, such as the backside of drywall, areas inside walls around leaking or condensing pipes, and above ceiling tiles.

Not only is a mold problem difficult and costly to fix, but mold can also produce allergens and irritants (and, rarely, toxins) that may compromise your health.

So what can you do if you're concerned about mold growing in your home?

The best approach is preventing mold before it becomes a problem. The key to mold prevention is simple: moisture control.

Hurricane Harvey

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

Our crews worked hard and fast to get help clean up

Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Major Hurricane at Category 4 strength on Friday, August 25 causing widespread devastating flooding and wind destruction along the Texas and Louisiana coast. After making landfall, the storm’s track continued through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, causing heavy rains and additional flooding situations.

Unprecedented flooding occurred across Houston, Beaumont and Port Arthur in Texas. Rainfall totals exceeded 50 inches in Houston.

SERVPRO mobilized and deployed Disaster Recover Teams to the most heavily impacted areas of Texas and Louisiana. Over 700 fully-equipped storm crews were deployed to help with the disaster.

One of the houses of Houston after the storm

When we received word of the magnitude of Hurricane Harvey we began packing the trucks and trailers to head to Houston, Tx to help with the efforts. A crew of six certificated techs from SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis Counties and lead by our storm team manager loaded up the trucks and headed south. With their boots on the crew waited through water, removing belongings that the costumers cherished and trying to put a smile on the their face. It was a long month and a lot of hard work, but we were happy to lend a hand.

Keep Fall Fire-Free

10/13/2017 (Permalink)

Hazardous Waste & Biohazard Services That Protect You, Your Family, Your Facility and Your Staff

10/1/2017 (Permalink)

Make certain that the restoration company that you hire knows how to handle biohazards properly. Call SERVPRO to discuss the situation.

The majority of biohazards in existence are only visible through the use of a microscope. Exposure to biohazards can be harmful. The two biggest problems you face are the dangerous elements and possible exposure and not knowing if the deceased is infected with any diseases. Organisms that exist outside the body and in sewage, floodwaters and even some condensation created by air conditioners possibly contain hazards that may be harmful to your health.

In some cases you may see the visible evidence of a biohazardous problem, but not the actual pathogens themselves. Black Water from sewage damage or rising river water carry elements hazardous to your and your family.  Many know this information “logically.” However, under stressful situations, people find themselves “smack-dab” in the middle of it as you see on the evening news after major floods.  In some cases, people can logically comprehend that flood waters and standing waters pose various health risks, including infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries.  However while personally experiencing a catastrophe, their personal loss or experiences sets them into a state of panic, and now they are in “survival mode” and often unable to think of these dangers.  So when you see people wading “in it” as the media shares the devastation, year after year, are these people unaware of the dangers?  They often have a higher need like life-saving or even a family heirloom?

Clean water sources may also pose a biohazardous threat if left in a structure too long or it comes in contact with certain elements. Any water source or excessive moisture can provide bacteria, fungi, and viruses with a perfect growing environment.  If you were to experience this type of loss, an inspection by a certified remediation company should be considered.  We all know the saying “Time is Money” and usually the longer these type of problems are allowed to remain, (grow), the unaware hazardous or more severe they become. Delaying to take action or choosing not to take action, could become a threat to you, your staff and/or even your business.  Statistics state: “50% of businesses go out of business when a disaster occurs.” The sooner the issues are dealt with, the less expensive is, if dealing with a repeatable restoration company. Build a good relationship with a restoration company who will bring forth honesty and integrity in their work and their billing practices. If you have products in your home or building and they are not properly stored, that poses some potential hazards.  This could be as little as some small amount of property damage and could potentially become hazardous to touch or breath.  In extreme cases, it could become volatile enough to cause a fire. Even if there was no fire and only presented itself as smoke, those products are likely to emit pollutants which could become a health risk.  It would also require experienced/trained technicians to get you back or keep you in business with the least amount of business interruption while minimizing the loss of revenues.  I strongly suggest every business owner and/or facility management company find a company who understand your needs and can respond and facilitate them in a timely manner.

Become a partner with your local Large Loss SERVPRO such as SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis Counties prior to an event/loss.  If you need help, we are here to help and your business becomes prepared in ways you never knew were available.  This is a specialized service to help Building Owners, Property Managers, Business Owners, Mantainence Managers, Insurance Companies/Adjusters/Agents and any other decision makers by partnering with them to control their loss ratios.  We do this getting to your next disaster as soon as we get your call.

When we were children in school, we did so many things to prepare ourselves in the event a natural disaster hits. Drill after drill, year after year. When learning to drive, take on a job even soon to be a new parent, we take classes.  We do all these things to prepare us for what is to come. Why is it that many companies do not know there is a disaster preparedness process we provide for our premier partners?   A simple phone Call to SERVPRO of Boyd, Carter, Greenup, and Lewis Counties  to get your name on a list to learn more about becoming a premier partner and what all that means for you, your building and your clients.  If any disaster or building issues come your way, you have a partner who is centrally located, one you can trust to help you through whatever you are hit with.  You are not supposed to handle this alone; it can be bigger than you ever imagined. Dealing with any disaster is difficult but dealing with BioRecovey has so many other layers of complexities.  We have a staff that is fully trained and certified who are ready to walk and work with you, side by side.  We can help speak and work with your insurance company and ensure there are clear lines of communication along the way; keeping you, the decision maker in control.

Before deciding which professional crime scene, BioRecovey service company to use on your property, you need to perform the proper research to determine whether they have the ability to perform to the standards you have paid for within your policy or when needing to make direct payment. Unfortunately, there are still a few companies that attempt to offer these services without the proper training, certifications which make it particularly important for you to verify their certifications and association with national and international organizations such as the IICRC, RIA or ABRA. Doing this prior to allowing them to begin work on your property would be wise.  Crime scenes are hectic with so many moving parts and so many people out there claiming they are the expert. We value the well-being of everyone in our community but as with everything in which we employ, “buyers beware.”

We are proud to provide education and training regarding these risks to property managers, maintenance personnel and/or anyone else who needs help understanding how to protect yourself or your property.  We have vast experience in how to keep you from becoming contaminated or even spreading” it,” (cross-contaminating).  We are here to help. If you are not covered, take ownership and make sure you solve this issue because a pipe bursting - a fire - a micro-burst coming through your neighborhood - none of this is good and it will cost you more money in the end. Talk to an insurance professional to protect yourself - your family - your business.

It is important to protect your belongings before an issue happens!

9/23/2016 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of Boyd, Carter, Greenup & Lewis Counties 606-836-8000

Yesterday was the first day of fall! The weather is already predicted to reach in the low 50's overnight next week (hard to believe when we are still hitting 90 during the day). As the cooler temperatures begin to creep in, preparing your house for fall weather may not be a bad idea!  Fall Checklist for your home:** Inspect and clean gutters and downspouts.** Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors with weather-stripping and caulk.** Inspect your roof for damaged or curled shingles, corroded flashing, or leaky vents.** Take steps to repair damaged sidewalks, driveways, and steps.** Drain and winterize outdoor faucets and irrigation systems.** Clean or replace dirty furnace filters.** Have a professional inspect your heating system.** Check fireplaces for soot or creosote build-up. Better yet, schedule a visit from a reputable chimney sweep.** Clean the plates or pads of your humidifier to ensure efficient operation.** If you have a gas-fired room heater, have it inspected by a pro. Also, perform any routine maintenance recommended by the maker.** Wood stoves are making a comeback. To avoid a deadly situation, be sure to inspect yours before firing it up.** Keep your family safe at home. A home safety check should be an annual ritual in every household. Test smoke and CO monitors, inspect (or install) fire extinguishers, review fire escape plans, and rid your home of old newspapers and other fire hazards. #SERVPRO #HereToHelp #SecondDayofFall

Tip Tuesday

9/20/2016 (Permalink)

Don't toss out scissors that don't seem to be cutting well any more. Simply give them a quick and easy sharpening by occasionally cutting through a piece of 150-200 grit sandpaper. This will give them a fresh edge to make them seem new again! #TipTuesday

Heat Wave Safety Tips

7/20/2016 (Permalink)

With local temperatures forecasted to stay in the 90s throughout the weekend we wanted to take the opportunity to share some tips for staying healthy and safe during a heat wave.

In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessive heat, generally 10 degrees or more above average, often combined with excessive humidity.

What To Do During a Heat Wave

  • Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids (WATER!) even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, caffeinated beverages and hot, spicy foods that can make dehydration worse.
  • Eat small meals and eat more often.
  • Try eating more cold foods like salads and fruits.  They contain water and are more refreshing in hot weather than hot foods.
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing made from natural fibers, like cotton or linen. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
  • Wear a hat or take an umbrella with you for shade if you’re outside on a hot day.
  • Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Postpone outdoor games and activities.
  • Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.

Grilling Safety

6/22/2016 (Permalink)
